Document Summary

Caesar was a young, aristocratic general of popularis political inclinations. He had been voted a triumph by the senate for his victories in spain. Caesar, however, also wanted to stand for the consulship of 59, but the law barred someone from both celebrating a triumph and standing for office in the same year. The optimates, worried that here was another over-mighty individual in the making, insisted on holding to tradition and refused to waive the rule. Caesar opted to forego his triumph and stand for election. And he now made common cause with pompey. They joined with crassus- pompey"s colleague in the consulship of 70- forming a pact known to historians today as the first triumvirate. He pushed through a raft of measures in his own and his fellow triumvirs" interests, and with their help had himself voted an extraordinarily long, 5- year command in gaul.
