Struggled to defend itself against german and austro-hungarian attacks during the first world war, russia was convulsed with not one, but two revolutions that would profoundly change not only russia, eventually the entire globe. Soviet experiment pushed for a different path to modernity, built on some of the more radical ideas of the enlightenment and of 19th century rational thinkers like karl marx. Effort to establish a communist utopia in russia and its hinterland would ultimately be a tragic failure, resulting in the deaths of millions of people.
