More specifically, japan had long had designs on the kingdom of korea, which was currently under chinese influence. A diplomatic dispute in 1894 led to war between china and japan over korea. The resulting victory by japan was a huge humiliation for china. As a result of their victory, japan took control of korea and annexed the chinese island of taiwan as well. Open door policy and economic concessions on china, which was now seen as too weak to resist. The war was the catalyst for the europeans to push further their claims for territories.
