Document Summary

History 1dd3- lecture 3 the american revolution. The origins of the american revolution lie in the mercantilist policies of european states in the early to mid-part of the 18th century. By the mid 18th century, britain and france dominated the eastern portion of the continent, with spain laying claim to the southwester portion. North america was a major battleground in one of the first globally fought wars at mid-century. France and britain fought all over the world; in india, the caribbean, north america, and elsewhere between 1756 and 1763. This was for control of colonies and raw materials. Britain was victorious in the seven years war, which set in motion the chain of events that culminated in the american declaration of independence in 1776. The seven years war not only drained the british treasury, but they now had more territories to defend with their victory.
