Portugal was already a nation state at this time for spain: portuguese, original iberians, original explorers, got most of the land but got ripped off when the pope drew the line of demarcation . Spain got all the good land and mexico (not discovered at time line was drawn: moors- spanish moslems (controlled spain from 7th century, steadily driven southward by spanish. El cid was the leader of the first attempt to drive the moslems out. Aka champador : won spain in a surrogate war. National hero of spain: by 15th century only controlled the south. *alhambra= muslim fortress: grenada= moslem city stronghold in 1492 the reconquista pushed the jews and moslems out of spain (see latter reconquista, isabella of castile (and leon)(1451-1504)**, daughter of john ii, owns west and middle spain. Sheep raising: much in common with portugal. Trade: colonial empire including, sicily, sardinia, the balearics, naples, more cosmopolitan, land considered less valuable by medieval standards.
