Empire - america declined the label of empire for most of its existence: it did not want to copy european colonialism; anti-imperial. George washington"s farewell address- warned american"s against empire and foreign involvement. Formal vs informal imperialism: formal- colonialism, annexation, military occupation, informal- economic penetration (denying a country access/control of its own natural resources), political subversion (ex. War involving spain, cuba, philippines (independence from spain- not totally successful) Us involved- why: cuba is geographically close to us and also had economic/social ties, cuba was dependent on us technology, us used most of cuba"s sugar, etc. Jose marti, leader of cuba- warned against the americans getting involved, ( who will drive them out? ) but died early in the war. American newspapers sensationalized war crimes in cuba- yellow journalism . Developed view they had to intervene in cuba because spain had created a socially unstable society, etc- drive for american intervention.
