Transportation planning process II
- Detroit and Chicago were pioneer projects that came up with how to invest large
amounts of money into huge transportation infrastructure projects
- You have to collect data to know where you stand before you can move forward
with a project
- Then you have to model what you think you want to do and then make
predictions about what you think will happen
- Then you have to evaluate and make a decision, this often means you have to
run a careful cost-benefit analysis
Pre-analysis phase
- This process can be expensive and time consuming however, compared to the
cost of building huge structures without carefully considering what will happen
the cost is not as bad as it could be if the project completely fails and you have to
do it again
- Traffic analysis zone (TAZ) these units are not always identical, they can vary in
size for instance
- We don’t use TAZs as much now and we focus more on individuals and their
uses of the infrastructure
Technical analysis
UTMS
- This process sees travel as having 4 distinct components
oYou have to know how many trips you have to consider
oThen you have to ask where these trips go
oWhat is the mode of these trips? Once we know where the trips are going
and how many there are you can start to identify what mode is likely to be
used
oThen you must identify the route that these variables will take
