Slide 3: love canal, houses surrounding the canal. Rising human health concerns: children were highly exposed because the canal was their backyard, so directly exposed to toxic waste, kids would actually go into the canal. Signs of (cid:494)white substance(cid:495), skin rashes, eyes burning, etc. Some of the kids would slide down into the canal: pools of the chemicals arise to the surface, kids getting covered into these chemicals. Slide 6: chemical-filled holes: drums filled with wastes rusted: top collapsed, and chemicals rose to surface, bubbles of chemicals formed at the surface, exposure of chemicals came out. Slide 9: barrels exposed to surface, 1977: drums of toxic wastes rose to surface. Slide 10: 1977: study of chemicals found in 11 homes, basements weren(cid:495)t lined like today and the movement of chemicals poured in easily. In samples, they found a whole series of chemicals and they found highly toxic chemicals: 10 highly toxic compounds found at high concentration, subsequent studies: 248 chemicals.
