Fort mcmurray, the resource town associated with the athabasca tar sands, is located. 435km north of edmonton - before 1870, it was a trading post for the hudson"s bay. The negative economic features of megaprojects in the north include a lack of economic diversification as well as industry sustainability. Resource towns experience rapid growth and decline known as the boom and bust syndrome - this is driven by the rise and fall of external demand for resource (i. e. forest products, minerals and hydroelectric power) Tv ads such as canada"s responsible resource development have been termed. Price of prosperity: negative impacts associated with the megaprojects include (but are not limited to) 1. Social problems (such as crime, substance abuse, and domestic abuse) 2.
