Document Summary
Atlantic canada lies on the eastern coast of canada. The provinces making up atlantic canada include newfoundland and labrador, pei, new brunswick and nova. Scotia - this area was the first point of european contact in north america. It is characterized by a rich maritime culture with many important historical influences from the uk. Atlantic canada was characterized by a strong regional economy in the 19th century. This shifted to a more peripheral position in the modern national economy in the 20th century. It is generally viewed as a hinterland region of canada; a slow growing region that supplies resources to the economic cores of ontario and quebec. A slow growing region in the context of the core-periphery model occurs when the economy is declining, unemployment is rising, and our migration is occurring. Often this is an old region dependent on resource development for its economic growth .
