Introduction to the Geographies of Economic Activity
Economic Base: the set of economic activities upon which a community relies in order to
generate income from elsewhere
- Broad and varied vs. narrowly focused and dominated
- In many cases, the economic base gets reflected in the identity to the
community/region
o E.g. otor-ity, steel-ity
Sectors (Activities) of the Modern Economy
- The stages of the process of producing goods and services: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary
o Goods producing vs services
- A. Goods Producing Sector:
o Primary: identification and extraction of raw materials
▪ E.g. agriculture, forestry, mining (including oil and gas), fishing, etc.
o Secondary: transformation into finished products
▪ The manufacturing or industrial sector
▪ E.g. manufacturing, processing, construction, etc.
- B. Service Sector:
o Tertiary: distribution and servicing of goods
▪ Consumer (personal) services: merchants, grocers, retailers, mechanics
etc.
▪ Business services: e.g. doctors, lawyers, architects, eyc.
▪ Sometimes, this is delineated into tertiary (personal), quaternary
(business) and quinary (government)
Economic Sectors and Development:
- Levels of economic development are often correlated with the relative sizes of these
different sectors
o Less developed economies: primary and secondary sectors
o More developed economies: service sector
