The geographies of secondary economic activities (manufacturing, industry, etc. ) Mdw: decline in industrial/manufacturing production via offshoring. Shifting of production offshore to somewhere else. First asian country to undergo significant industrialization: beginning in late 19th. Initially low-quality consumer goods, but now manufacturing everything. Industrialization throughout east asia, south asia and latin america: linked to low- skilled assembly of consumer goods and containerization. Export processing zone (epz): an area exempt from import/export duties, with subsidized infrastructure (ports, rail links, etc. ) and with weak regulation (labour & environment) Foxconn: a taiwanese electronics manufacturing company, with operations throughout the newly industrializing world, especially china. Controversial history in terms of working conditions, wages, employee health, etc. Maquiladoras: export processing ones along the mexican side of the u. s border. Low-cost assembly (cheap labour and low taxes) Tncs: most (& biggest) are involved in producing and selling manufactured goods. Largest tncs (i. e. toyota, apple, etc. ) are larger than most national economies.
