GEOG 1HB3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Contour Line, Spatial Analysis, International Date Line
Document Summary
Map: a two-dimensional graphical representation of the world; a device used to: communicate information and 2) analyze (solve) spatial problems. The market area" for a retail chain. The distribution of health, wealth & poverty. Reflect the power of people that draw them. Read with perspective and see if it is logical. Projection: mathematical technique for representing a 3-dimensional sphere on a 2- dimensional map. Three main kinds of projections exist - each with their own advantage and limitations. Main forms: cylindrical projections: the earth"s surface is projected onto a cylinder that just touches the outside edges of the globe (usually at the equator) Accuracy is greatest in the mid latitudes. Lamber conformal conic projection: azimuthal projections: the earth"s surface is projected onto a flat surface that touches the globe at only one point (usually the polar regions) Latitude and longitude: a system of imaginary arcs which are used to identify an absolute location for all areas of the earth.
