Document Summary
Cities and urbanization part 2 (what does urban mean?) Last class: rural vs. urban, greater proportions of the population are living in urban areas each year, urbanizations is relatively relevant, spatial variations in the levels of urbanization. Urbanization is connected to economic and social challenges such as industrialization. Urban and rural areas are usually de ned in relation to one another, whatever is urban, is not rural (and vice versa) This dichotomy is helpful, but it is also problematic*** not all rural places are the same and not all urban places are the same. There are meaningful variations within both of these categorizations, i. e. - rural saskatchewan versus rural southern ontario versus northern canadian forest. Burlington same population but one is town and one is city. There are other differences that make a place a city/town and such, population size doesn"t solely matter. Some languages do not even differentiate between towns and cities i. e. ville.
