Space: areal extent (how much of the earth"s surface: absolute space: measurable, objective, does not vary, its fixed, physically real, with measurable extent and definable boundaries. Key for map making, description and analysis(explanation) of spatial distributions: relative space: subjective/ perceptual and variable over time (varies from person to person) (one person"s interpretation) (may change over time) (perspective) (ex. Looking for an apartment, and ad may describe it as being cozy- changing the language in order to have a seperate connotation) Names of places can provide a degree of locational understanding. Place can be contested e. g. two seperate names for same place derry. londonderry. Place: a location with a particular identity or meaning or significance (individual or collective) -location + cultural/human meaning = place: sense of place: the personally significant attachments we associate with certain place ie. your childhood home (nostalgia), etc. Sense of place can be positive or negative.
