Individuals: places that have meaning resulting from your personal experiences. Society or culture: places that develop their meaning from group experiences, often develop over a long time. Difference between places of worship vs places like fast food restaurants. In both cases the architect/ designer or even the occupants have tried to create meaning to the place. In the case of the church, the meaning attached to that place is, on the one hand, locally unique and on the other hand broadly similar to other similar places. In the case of mcdonald"s, these places are designed to be virtually the same everywhere. Mcdonalds in dundas is basically the same as mcdonalds in dubai. Places like east side marios are not authentic and no ones believes them to be. However , if you go to little italy in manhattan, you will actually find places that look like this (places in italy)
