System of record that allows us to collect pieces of data and group them together. System of engagement to engage public, government, businesses etc. to enact some sort of societal change. A framework and process transforming how we think and act, creating a more sustainable future. Today it is a multibillion dollar business used in many sectors of our economy. Current estimated value of the geospatial industry is billion usd and growing at 30% per year. There is not a mainstream industry not using gis and its related technologies. Currently, twitter has 330 million monthly active users. Currently 500 million tweets sent around the world daily (82% use their phone to tweet) Tweets, facebook posts, flickr pictures etc. all have geographic tags . This is an example of what we call volunteered geographic information (vgi) aka. crowdsourcing.
