Geopolitics: the study of the importance of space in understanding international. Economic globalization and concentration of power in global alliances (nafta,eu, etc. ) Modern countries: a series of geopolitical forces working over a period of time. These geopolitical forces result in: the bringing together of (potentially diverse) nations into one (multinational) sovereign state. E. g. canada, belgium, switzerland, etc: the breaking apart of (potentially similar) nations. Centripetal forces bring nations together into one multinational state (ex. These forces are always present for every country; it is a matter of which. Canada, belgium, switzerland) force is more influential at any point in time. Lack of homogeneity leads to weak state identity. A history of mistreatment leading to resentment. State instability results from cultural/ national divisions within the state. Secessionist movements: nations within multinational state that want to create their own separate state. Quebec, scotland, belgium, basque (spain and france) - tied to a strong sense of nationalism.
