Document Summary
The component parts of the urban landscape are: Downtown: ex - the central business district (cbd) Commercial areas ex - offices, stores, restaurants, etc. Neighbourhood: a part of the city that displays some internal homogeneity regarding type of housing, may be characterized by a relatively uniform income level and/or ethnic identity, and usually reflects certain shared social values. The two key components of this definition are that neighbourhoods are comprised of: homes and buildings (the built form), and. Individual (and groups of) people and their respective cultural traits. The built form of neighbourhoods is relatively permanent => changes come in incrementally and/or via broader-scale redevelopment. Gradual social change: as houses are passed from one individual/family to the next, two types of gradual social change are common: i) economic and ii) cultural. Economic change: members of one income group to another. Filtering: a transitions that occurs as housing units are passed from. Downward-filtering => leads towards urban decay and abandonment.
