Introduction to political geography: states, nations & territories. Political units (i. e. countries): the basic division of the world. Closely related to language, religion, etc. (i. e. culture) Ir reflects the current cultural differences, as well as historical influences such as colonialism and globalization, etc. Political geography: the study of the geographical manifestations of political phenomena - especially the effect that states have on individual & group behaviours. The relationship between states & former colonies. How and why states are organized into regional groupings, both formally and informally. The forces of conflict between political entities. The function, demarcation (placement) and enforcement of territorial boundaries. The study of election results (electoral geography) Most cultural groups (as defined by language, or religion, or common ancestry, etc. ) see themselves as having national identity - i. e. they are a nation. Nation: a group of people sharing a common culture and an emotional attachment to some territory.
