Introduction to cities and urban forms of settlement. Maybe they differ in terms of their culture, i. e. the way of life. Louis wirth: size, density, heterogeneity of urban populations make for greater anonymity and social isolation. Globally, urban population exceeded rural population for the first time in ~2007- 85% in canada and our class was majority urban. Fewer rural residents = fewer people producing food. Significant social/ cultural shift - a shift that means we are now an urban society. General ideas that we can think about that would differentiate it from a rural area. Centres of large, diverse, and densely concentrated populations. Centres of concentrations of power and economic activity. Political power, economic power (e. g. toronto city hall and head offices of td bank) Centres of cultural change (e. g. education, social heterogeneity, etc. ) Places which reflect social, economic & political diversity.
