Urbanism: the urban way of life; associated with a declining sense of community and increasingly complex social and economic organization as a result of increasing population size, density, and heterogeneity. Urban change: understood with respect to two dimensions of growth: relative & absolute growth. 2 components to urban change: urban growth and urbanization. Urban growth = absolute, urbanization = relative change in the population. Urbanization: an increase in the proportion of the population living in urban areas: a fundamental re-organization of human society, the transformation of population from rural to urban status. You can have urban growth without urbanization; they don"t go hand in hand. 2007: the urban and rural populations were the same. Cities of the ldw is tremendous urban growth. Africa at 40% urbanized and asia at 48% urbanized. China: 1980: 2-% urbanized, 2015: 56% urbanized. India: 1980: 25% urbanized, 2015: 33% urbanized.
