Geopolitics: the study of the importance of space in understanding international relations. Modern countries: a series of geopolitical forces working over a period of time: these geopolitical forces result in, bringing together of (potentially diverse) nations in one (multinational) sovereign state. E. g. canada, belgium, switzerland, etc: breaking apart of (potentially similar) nations into two (or more) sovereign states. E. g. czechoslovakia, yugoslavia, etc: such forces are always present for every country, czechoslovakia -- peaceful separation; yugoslavia war. These geopolitical forces are known as: centrifugal forces (tearing apart of states), and, centripetal forces (bringing together or states) Centrifugal forces are typically related to: cultural homogeneity. Lack of homogeneity leads to weak state identity: cultural history. Lack of a collective history (e. g. former colonies) -- histories of all different ethnicities. A history of mistreatment leading to resentment: boundaries.
