ENVIRSC 1A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Sensible Heat, Evaporation, Latent Heat
Document Summary
The earth"s warmth is provided by the sun, which has the most heat in its core. In the core nuclei and protons combine at fast speeds, creating a thermonuclear process which makes energy which moves it"s way to the suns outer surface (the photosphere) Temperatures on the photosphere are much lower than the core. Most of the sun"s energy is emitted from the surface. Earth has a lower surface temperature than the sun, therefore the sun radiates much more energy. The energy transferred from the sun to the earth travels is called radiant energy, or radiation. Electromagnetic waves: waves from the sun to the earth that release energy when they are absorbed by an object a wavelength is from one crest to another; the longer waves carry less energy than the short ones. Radiation: streams of particles or photons that are discrete packets of energy. An ultraviolet photon carries more energy than an photon of visible light.
