General definition: a long, narrative, heroic poem about a serious subject, written in an elevated style, with a central heroic figure who influences the fate of whole nations and/or races. Epics are concerned with warfare and the heroic virtues of courage, strength, and loyalty. Considered to be the most demanding, comprehensive genre, also the most authoritative. The narrator directs the reader through the epic poem. The process of getting to the ending is important. Milton was physically blind he spoke his poem and friends and family. Active reader elaboration stanley fish (a critic(cid:524) says (cid:498)the reader is engaged and think about their response(cid:499) Satan doesn"t appear in genesis but it does in milton"s play. There is very little written by satan in the bible post-bible there are many. Milton (cid:498)was of the devil"s party without knowing it(cid:499) critics and fellow poets said this.
