The bigger dogs are higher on the hierarchical scale. The smaller dogs look up to the bigger ones. Benji believes that atticus and his crew (all big dogs) have the cleverness and wisdom-> believes that being big and being wise/ powerful go hand in hand. The dogs in the bottom of the hierarchy need the dogs on top and vice versa. The biggest ones are on the top and only they can mount each other. The dogs on top are using this mounting as a way to dominate the lower class ones-> pg. 73, they mount benji to show they are powerful. Benji realizes that if he leaves then they cannot mount anyone, so he has power-> they needed him.
