Lecture 2 (sir gawain and the green knight): May or may not be historically accurate. Arthur pulls sword out of stone, creates the court of camelot, and marries guinevere. Green knight"s appearance is composed by morgan le fey, arthur"s half-sister using magic. At this time, devil was believed to be green, but green knight"s physique is so perfect that he is portrayed as virtuous. Green also means: renewal (like gawain renews camelot), naivety. Queen guinevere has no dialogue, but is spoken to with high esteem. Ladies are never given any characteristics except beauty; seems their role is just that of aesthetics. Embroidered so thick as if many women had worked on it seven years in town. (613) Image of the queen of heaven on the inside of his shield so that his heart never quailed. Only given a physical description, not one of character or personality. Wives were shared with others; marriage not sacred.
