EARTHSC 2GG3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Future Group, Vertical Draft, Beach Nourishment
Document Summary
The landscapes where coninents meet oceans are dynamic and capable of rapid change. Major hazards include rip currents, erosion, sea level rise, storm surges and tsunamis. Some coastline margins are inluenced by plate tectonics. Acive margins are relaively close to plate boundaries. Passive margins have wide coninental shelves , sandy or pebbly beaches and barrier islands. Acive margins have more rocky shorelines and sea clifs (bc) Coastal topography is inluenced by the type of rock as well as the sediment deposited from rivers or glaciers. Wind blowing over an ocean or a lake transfers energy to the water, producing waves. Waves travel through the water and expend their energy at the shoreline. The size of a wave depends on: velocity and duraion of wind, fetch (the distance wind blows across the water) Wave height: the diference in height between a crest and a trough. Wavelength: the distance between successive wave crests.
