Document Summary

Part of the hydrologic cycle, transport water that has fallen onto land toward the oceans. If precipitaion does not iniltrate into the soil, it lows along the surface (runof) Eventually the runof will reach a stream (if it does not evaporate irst) Every river has a drainage basin (area of surrounding land that is drained by that river) Draining basins can also be deined for lakes, it is deined as the area of land that drains into that lake. A divide is a ridge of higher land that separates which way rivers low. Coninental divide is located along the spine of the rocky mountains. It separates which ocean the streams and rivers will eventually drain into. It is determined by calculaing the change in elevaion over the distance the river lows. The slope of a river is shown on a longitudinal proile. In higher elevaions the gradient is oten steep.
