Post oice protocol- good for of line mail. Internet message access imap is related to e-mail. Phone modem data from the computer gets modulated to analogue and sent to the other computer. Demodulates (converts it back to digital) the data and stores it. Other protocols are needed e. g ppp, slip dial up/ phone modem speed 56kbps. Networking sotware is required in order to connect to the internet. e. g. phone modems require ppp or slip. Every computer on the internet has a unique ip address. Currently, a 32 bit address broken into 4 parts (each part 0-255) is used: e. g. 130. 113. 68. 1 (ipv4) The new ipv6 uses a 128 bit address- each digit is a hexadecimal digit 1 hex digit is 4bits e. g. 1234:abce:a023:1234:1234:0001:0a0a:3333. If you want to set something up at home: Fixed address, normally for web hosing sites, isps, mail hosing sites: dynamic. The machine asks" for an ip address using dhcp (dynamic host coniguraion protocol).
