Normally produce a hardcopy of the output. Form images by hitting the paper ( similar to typewriter) , with a ink ribbon between the printhead and paper. Mediocre quality resolution ( print heads were either 9 pin or 24 pin) Good for carbon copies ( multi-part forms) E. g ( line printers, dot matrix ( with the pins)) Impact printers are usually more robust, good for industrial environment. Line printers had a metal band containing the characters the machine could produce, often strictly text, could not produce graphics. Ink is sprayed or melted onto the paper. Fast ( a good non-impact can do 20 pages/minute ) E. g ( inkjet , bubblejet , laser, led ( sometimes categorized with laser) Image quality - resolution - dots per inch, usually higher is better. Speed - text pages per minute, or colour/b&w graphics pages per minute , usually higher is better.
