Discuss stage and punctuated equilibrium models of group development. Explain effects of group size and diversity. Describe norms, roles, status in social interaction. Two or more people interacting interdependently to achieve a common goal through reciprocal influence. Formal group - made by organization to achieve organization goals. Stable - members are usually constant and do not change very much. Dynamic - members can change, with a fixed ending (e. g project team , committee , task force ) Occur naturally in response to common interests of organizational members. Group development: punctuated equilibrium model: first meeting ( not much is done, midpoint ( realization of urgency, project deadline ( slight burst of activity before the deadline) Group member s individual needs are satisfied (e. g need for power, affiliation, achievement) Effectiveness due to relationships between team size. Social integration ( getting to know a large group is much more difficult)
