According to the theory, resource dependency occurs when an individual needs something that another individual has. Individual with the needs is dependent on the other. Power occurs when the person with the need gets it, gets the resource, in exchange for change in thoughts and behaviour. Differences between positive and negative power - two way voluntary exchange. Negative - do what you are told, in voluntary. Positive - voluntary, there is something here for you to do. Structural bases - power that organization gives to you. Legitimate power - derived from a person"s position or job in an organization. Individual has an authority to exercise power, control other people because of where they sit on the hierarchy. Reward power - derived from the ability to provide positive outcomes and prevent negative outcomes. Possesses resources that other person wants, the other person has the power to dispense. Coercive power - derived from the use of punishment and threat.
