Today, want to offer different way of thinking about relationship w/audience and media violence. What if we read violet media texts less for the effects and more affects pleasure, discomfort, identi cation, etc. Alison young: media violence should be read not just (or at all) for the effects it results in: we should also consider for kinds of subject or viewing positions media places the spectator/audience. The camera and the gaze: need to ask how the camera works and th different kinds of gazes produced, spectators gaze: look of viewer or audience member at images on screen. Can be aligned or coextensive w/camera but does not always need to be: diegetic or intra-diegetic:look of one character at another (or at an animal/object w/in world of lm)
