57 views4 pages

Document Summary

Theories help frame understanding, can help explain meanings, the "whys", "so what" Theories + methods are connected to epistemologies (ways of knowing) Different ways of knowing can be categorized into paradigms. Paradigms structure how we know, underlying assumptions about how and why we know things (and the theories/methods used to find out!) Reality: things exist separate from out perceptions of them--physical world, social interaction. Knower- any knower will discover same knowledge (detached from study) Knower interprets reality from their subjective standpoint, their own values/life. Knower/known are therefore inseparable; researcher is often active participant. Purpose of research: understood meaning (knowledge) and how it is produced, understood by specific people in specific contexts. Research process: rich description, very descriptive (or "thick" description) Researcher is an active interpreter of the project. Do not use this word to describe interpretation. "you have a bias towards strawberry ice cream. " Reality: constructed subjectively/different perceptions and values; multiple interpretations of reality.
