Its overly simpliied": receiver must decode or interpret the communicaion to understand the idea. **note: we will be using the word text to refer to any medium (any form of communicaion, anything that"s communicaing an idea) A picture of ferdinand de saussure wanted to study how signs become meaningful. Sign = anything that carries meaning (e. g. word, image, sound) Signiier = the thing we see, hear, feel. Is that required: in diferent languages, they all sound diferent - you have to know the language in which they"re situated to understand the meaning, language structured through meaning. The signiier is arbitrarily related to the sign. Polysemy: having many meanings: texts are polysemic makes them open to interpretaion. They leave endings of the movie open so we can interpret them ourselves and have a conversaion about it.
