News is a media production, presented in a story format. News is not a passive presentation of daily events; news is determined by journalists, reporters, and editors based on "newsworthiness", mandate, and perceived audience interest. Seven determinants of newsworthiness: (mencher, 2000: timeliness. Impact on the audience: prominence, proximity, conflict, peculiarity, currency. Journalists and news editors are gatekeepers of news production selecting which stories to cover. Different news organization may have different treatments for the same story, varying length of coverage ad prominence in presentation. Each news organization has its own brand which also determines the stories it choose to publish and how it chooses to present them (e. g. tabloids vs broadcasts) Journalists frame reality, deciding what stories and images to present, and what to leave out of the frame. News organizations are limited by time and resources in what news stories they can present. News organization have political biases that determine how they react to news stories.
