Libertarian theory: suspicious of state, supportive of free speech, private interests. Social responsibility theory: citizens have right to be informed, opposed to authoritarianism. Mass society thesis: media can unify, influence citizens. Marx argued that under capitalism, two main classes emerge: capitalists and workers. Marxist analysis: there is potential for a better life that can be shared by all. Critical political economy concerned with ways in which media support dominant interests. Much of this to be facilitated by communication technology. Refers to the increased mobility of people, capital, commodities, information, and images associated with the post-industrial stage of capitalism; With the development of increasingly rapid and far-ranging communication and transportation technologies; And with people"s improved (though far from universal) access to these technologies (307) Globalization is not a new phenomenon, but has increased levels of diversity, contact. Media do not always play the role they should. Media corporations aim for largest # of consumers.
