The act of putting ideas into words, paintings, sculpture, film, plays, television programs or any other medium of communication. Representations are partial: they only contain truth in partial installments: signification: Complex process of creating signs which have various meanings depending on the the process of creating meaning cultural context of the encoder and decoder. The father of structuralism: studies the internal relations between signs by ignoring the referent: society seen as an entity composed by structures that guide and restrict human agency. Saussure: language is to be understood as a sign system constituted by interrelated terms without positive values (meaning is relational) Each sign composed of a signifier (sound image) and a signified (concept / meaning) Value of terms are generated by the presence of others. The relationship between the signifier and the signified is arbitrary: it could only be the product of cultural and historical conventions.
