Judge how well press is holding up ideal role is should play in society. Understand larger social forces shape society as well as the media/press. Media --> extension of individual right to free expression. Help judge gov"t and vote to keep gov"t accountable. Criticism: doesn"t acknowledge that the private sector will eventually turn the media towards its own interests. Press should be free and should be untainted by other interests. In canada and europe it is possible to limit free speech based on a consideration of its consequences. The right of privacy outweigh the right of free speech. For example, a reporter limiting crime details to ensure accused gets a fair trial. Critique: doesn"t acknowledge broader contexts that constrain media (e. g. politics, economics) masses of people were threatening to elites; a threat to order. Considers tastes and values of upper class to be superior. Considers wealthier people more able to understand or resist.
