CLASSICS 2K03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Oeconomicus, Pithos, Hetaira
Document Summary
We don"t know much about greek women since most writings were by men. Sappho was the only female greek writer whose works survive. Not many works survive because when christian monks were copying works, Sappho"s work was too scandalous (women loving women) Taught music and poetry to young ladies before they married. Her poetry focuses on her sensual love for her students. Unfortunately, tells us little about the lives of greek women. Partially because not much of her work survives. Prometheus steals fire from zeus, zeus decides to retaliate. Women are a bad thing (expressly called evil) Emphasizes how beautiful women are, and how much that can sway men. Each of the gods gave something to her: pandora ( all gift ) Women were created separately, long after men (almost a separate species) Pandora actually opened a jar, not a box (since in greece, they didn"t use boxes to store things, they used jars)
