Doric columns surrounded cryselephantine statue in east area of the cella. Shafts of columns have slight convex curves, get a little smaller going up. Understanding design of parthenon in terms of older temples. Parthenon is unique in terms of putting together orders, sculpture and overall configuration. Configuration seen before at early archaic temple temple of artemis at corfu, 580 bc. Parthenon was largest doric temple of greek mainland when it was constructed. Greater amount of columns allowed temple to look soaring and ethereal. Configuration of interior building, within 8x17 peristyle there is two rooms plus unusual entranceways. Prostyle arrangement is more commonly seen in ionic temples - similar to temple of athena nike. Find first integration at temple of athena at paestum (500. Bc) which had doric exterior colonnade and pro-style ionic porch.
