It was recognized as important and sacred as early as the 8th century, could not be bought, owned or resided upon. Became central sanctuary of the city dedicated to patron deity, athena. Acropolis : high city, high part of the city. Geometric kraters were placed on the acropolis used as votive offerings, demonstrates that it is a sacred space. Important shift occurs at mid-point of 6th century bc. Games modeled on the olympic games but with more events (army) and with prizes (25288$) Army dancing together, shows cooperation and ability to fight together. Games/festival only for athens, shows that they see themselves as better than other city states, one city wants to be seen as pinnacle of greek world. Procession to acropolis results in two events to end the ceremony.
