CLASSICS 2B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Ululation, Amphora, Grave Goods
Document Summary
Greece in the dark ages (10th century, follows collapse of mycenaean palace system) In the 10th century we get first indication that communities are increasing in size and moving away from mere subsistence. Biggest piece of evidence is heroon or hero shrine - use of monumentality. Storage space next to a large room, this configuration, in broad strokes, represents configuration of mycenaean palaces. Form recalls order of society that preceded it. Know less about who used this space than we know about mycenaean rulers. Man and woman entombed in the floor. Heroon seemed to have been deliberately destroyed, burned and then mound of earth put over it. Earth mounded on top creating a sort of cone shape - like the tholos tomb. 4 horses buried there, horses would have been very expensive - associated with elite class, aristocracy, indicates that these people were of higher class. Perhaps the woman was sacrificed to go with him, possibly his wife.
