Macedonia had developed differently in socio-political terms from greece (contrast with the polis) Macedonia had been forged under argead dynasty. Kings exercised weak control over kingdom - not able to raise its resources. Greeks regarded macedonians as rough, primitive, barbarous. Was blind in one eye as a result of battle. Unified macedonia under strong royal rule + reorganizes army. Greece was profoundly altered after peloponnesian war (new tactics, etc. ) Philip was not interested in tactic of hoplite soldiers. Innovated warfare - a royal army (not citizen militia); raised subjects to serve as fulltime professional soldiers in the king"s army. Professional training provided basis for new + improved phalanx. Macedonian phalanx (sarissas) o o o o o. More than ever the phalanx was a deadly dense wall of spears. Swept in in a wedge formation to pull opposing phalanx apart completely. Greeks met each other in battlefield rather than sieging cities.
