Myth and poetry played a big role in any form of education. Father wanted him to pursue diff career- tried, but then his brother died when he (cid:449)as 20ish, (cid:272)ould(cid:374)"t resist dra(cid:449) of poetr(cid:455) (cid:894)ga(cid:448)e i(cid:374)to poetr(cid:455) a(cid:374)d i(cid:374)dulge(cid:374)(cid:272)es(cid:895) Did(cid:374)"t ha(cid:448)e a patro(cid:374)- could write anything he wanted and support himself bc he was wealthy. Catullus was dead, but considered an old classic (horace and virgil are just at their prime as he starts) Friends w elegists tibullus and propertius- all part of younger group of poets.
