Document Summary
Water spontaneously dissociates into ions autoionization. Process does not go far towards products, forms an equilibrium between water and hydronium and hydroxide. Water is amphoteric = behave as either acids or bases. Kw = concentration of hydronium ions x concentration of hydroxide ions: 1. 0 x 10-14 at 25 degrees celsius. Damage to monuments and nature due to acid rain. Ocean acidification resulting in destruction of the great barrier reef. Worked on dissolution of compounds and formation of strong and weak electrolytes, conductivity, etc: nobel prize 1903. Acids = species that ionize in water, generate a proton, or h+ Bases = ionize in water, generate hydroxide ions oh= Acid-base reaction = neutralization of an aqueous proton with hydroxide. Valid definition only applicable to protic acids and metal hydroxides in water. Relatively simple definition, excludes species (such as bf3 or nh3) ion. Acid = proton donor, or h= donor. Base = proton acceptor, or h= acceptor.
