Document Summary
Open system: material + energy exchange (open beaker) Closed system: only energy exchange (closed beaker - light can come in, but atoms are not exchanged) Isolated system: neither material nor energy exchange (thermos - no atoms can come in or out, no heat escapes, no light enters ) Endothermic reactions ( h > 0: example, photosynthesis, sunlight (energy) is used to build glucose and other simple sugars, energy must be put into the reaction, for the reaction to occur. If the forward reaction process is endothermic, then the reverse reaction is exothermic. If system is doing work on surroundings then q + w are exiting the system into the surroundings. If the surroundings are doing work on the system, then q + w are going into the system. U system + u surroundings = u universe = 0. State vs. path function: state function, one state to another - does not matter what path was taken, example: energy.
