BIOLOGY 2F03 Lecture 5: Chapter 5 –Temperature Relations
Document Summary
Microclimate: climate variation for a very specific area. It is influenced by landscape features such as altitude, vegetation, colour of the ground, presence of boulders and burrows. Macroclimate: what weather stations report. (what"s in our climate diagrams). It is determined by the global patterns of air and water circulation and other forces. Arctic drya flowers follow the sun act as solar reflectors. Insects are attracted by their warmth = good because drya"s need poillinators. Macroclimate interacts with the local landscape to produce microclimate variation in temperature. The sun"s uneven heating of earth"s surface + earth"s tilt on its axis produce. Low average temperature at high elevations is a consequence of many factors: altitude. Atmospheric pressure decreases with elevation, surrounding environment. Less atmosphere to trap and radiate heat back to the ground. Mountains create microclimates by shading land cools: vegetation and green colour. Fallen trees, twigs,, shrubs in desert leaves create microclimates.
