BIOLOGY 2C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Retrotransposon, Ribosomal Rna, Chromatin
Document Summary
There are 20,000 genes in the human genome. Only 1. 1 percent of the genome codes for functional proteins. Barbara looked at different coloured corn kernels. Transposable elements move across the genome (they can jump from one location to another) They are not actually genes, they are non-coding regions. Due to transposable elements, we do not get regular. Wildtype is purple due to the gene in the anthocyanin pathway. This gene is in many plants for purple colour. We see both colours in a mosaic, pure yellow and pure purple, no yellow spots on purple kernels, and the frequency of spots is different in different kernels. There is a frequency of spots which is different from one kernel to the next. Take dna from the yellow region and purple region and look under the microscope. Chromosome 9 had a deletion in the purple. Chromosome 9 codes for gene, c, which codes for colour.
